Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs)

STSM is a tool allowing scientists to go to an institution or a laboratory in a COST member state or partner institution of the Action to another one in order to:

  1. foster collaboration
  2. learn a new technique
  3. take measurements using instruments and /or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory.

They are particularly intended for young (in career terms, rather than age) scientists, so-called Early Stage Researcher (ESR < PhD + 8 years).

The Applicant must be engaged in a research program in an institution or a laboratory in a partner country/institution of the Action (having signed the Memorandum of Understanding).

The STSM should not be in the country where the Applicant is normally a resident. The host institution (public or private) must be considered as a COST partner having signed the MoU and participating to the COST Action.

The power of selecting the candidates is delegated to the Management Committee (MC) of the Action.

The financial support is a contribution to the cost of a STSM and may not necessarily cover all the costs in each case. The grant normally covers only travel and subsistence. The contribution for a STSM is a fixed grant based on the Applicants budget request and decision of the MC. It will not exceed the limits set in the COST rules for STSMs. The duration should be minimum one week (5 working days), and maximum 3 months (up to 6 months for PhD students).

STSMs are generally from COST countries to partner institutions in COST or non-COST countries. STSMs from non-COST countries having reciprocal agreements (e.g. Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa) to COST countries are possible but the implementing agents have to be contacted in these respective countries by the applicant (For instance, see http://www.esastap.org.za/esastap/cost/index.php for South Africa).

Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) - Call for applications 2014

!!! DEADLINE - 1st of April 2014 !!!

  • This is the last call under the EGO COST Action ES0904. Since the Action ends on 30 June 2014, please plan your STSM to take place within the Action time frame.
  • Supported Activity A limited number of funds (maximum 2000 EUR each grant) are available to support travel and lodging costs associated with a research-oriented activity at a host institution which is a member of the EGO Cost Action ES0904. These missions last from 1 week to 3 months and are meant to transfer expertise on scientific ideas and methods related to underwater glider platforms and to foster collaboration, to learn a new technique, or to take measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in the researcher's own institution/laboratory.
  • Who should apply Anyone who feels they (or their institution or country) could benefit from another institution in order to carry out more effective or creative use of gliders for scientific purposes should apply. The researcher and the host should both be a part of the COST Action (have representatives on the Management Committee of the Action in place). Nearest Neighbor countries can also participate by sending a researcher to a COST country. Emphasis will be given to Early Stage Researchers (ESR, 8 years from PhD) who can use up to 6 months for the STSM.
  • How to apply Once you have an idea, contact your potential host for approval. Then you should enter the e-COST system in order to enter your request, a short summary of the planned work and bank details. You must then fill out the ES0904_STSM_application_form.doc. Please contact the STSM manager to verify receipt of your E-cost request and to provide the application above, which is a short summary of the activity and how it will fit into one or more of the five working groups of the Action, as well as an approximate budget.
  • There will be a first evaluation of all applications by the Core Group who will then submit the list of STSMs with priorities to the Management Committee.
  • Invitations will be sent to successful applicants through e-COST. The host institution will have to confirm the STSM via email to the Chair and the Grant Holder, before the Action could give any support.
  • The Action will end in October 2013. STSMs have to be carried out before. Reimbursement will be made up to 1 month after the STSM but a short host-approved scientific report must be supplied beforehand to the Chair and STSM Manager of the Action.
